Prologue
4.5 BILLION YEARS AGO . . .
The full moon’s light illuminated the barren landscape of planet Earth. Multiple shades of brown extended endlessly among the sand and rock formations. One structure towered above all the rest. It was a tall, narrow pile of granite that seemed to extend to the heavens. Each rock appeared to have been strategically placed, although Earth was uninhabited by any living being at the time.
A rush of frigid air broke the stillness of the warm night air, stirring the dust and debris from where it had lain dormant for eons. Suddenly the air became thick with a haze as the forceful wind gained momentum with each passing second. Within a minute, land could not be differentiated from sky as a huge meteorite barreled down from the heavens. An intense blinding light lit up the entire sky and a deafening explosion shook the core of the Earth as this alien space object plummeted into the ground. Tiny remnants of the meteorite disintegrated into a fine dust on impact. The entire landscape had been shifted by the immense, newly created crater, except for one thing: the towering rock formation. The slender granite structure remained completely intact, its presence even more dominating than before. It was as if the formation not only extended upward but also into the bowels of the Earth. Its size seemed to have doubled with the newly formed crater.
The debris in the air thickened as it ascended quickly toward the moon. The sky grew a deeper, darker shade of brown. Millions of small remnants from the meteorite scattered on the floor of the crater. Some of the pieces began shifting back and forth. Tiny green specks wiggled out of the shattered meteorite as the dirty air closed its black curtain on planet Earth.
